Ever have this happen?
You pay a company, friend, or freelancer, to do your website work. They get paid, you get your website. Things are just swell in your world, and you're ready to divide and conquer.
In business, you have to be agile, or you're through. Now, you've changed your business model a little and it's time to get the website updated. Here's where the trouble starts:
Your website is being held hostage! By.. your webmaster!
I know. It sounds like an oxymoron.
I wish it were not the case, but some people have a hard time just getting their website! SOS!
So, I came up with a list of things you can do to help RESCUE YOUR WEBSITE!
First, lets look at reasons why you can't get your website:
- Your web guy is a hack, and has no idea how to deliver your site. They're incapable.
- Your web guy is decent, but knows delivering your site means he is cut off, so he's reluctant. They're afraid.
- Your web guy (or web girl) is a pro, but thinks you owe them more money. They're reticent.
Whether your web master is Stupid, Afraid, or Reticent, is what you need to determine first. Then you can decide how to proceed. It might be all of those!
Ok,
- Rule #1: Always be nice. Try to remember when being an @sshole ever got you anywhere. Exactly. Be nice.
- Rule #2: No matter how mad you get, remember rule #1. This is business people- not your family intervention.
Got that? Great. Ok, now that you gathered yourself, here are some simple steps to take.
- First, just send an email, and ask for "what you paid for" citing the details. Email saves everyone time. And usually works.
- If that won't work: Call, during business hours, and ask directly.
- If that wont work: Try to call some more. Offer referral work. Be nice.
- If that wont work: Find receipts. Cite them. Ask for what you purchased.
- If that wont work: Email the receipts. Ask politely for what you purchased (website+template+database) Be nice.
- If that wont work: Send a letter of "legal" nature via mail. Even if it costs money to have the lawyer send it for you.
- Tell the lawyer you're suing him for "damages" because this "impedes your ability to do business" by holding your website hostage.
- If that wont work, let me call him.
I'll talk them off the bridge, or make subtle threats to his physical safety. Whatever works!

Hope this helps you get what you paid for!
PS violence is never ok (for you)
